Why Your Placer County Business Isn’t Showing Up on Google (And How to Fix It)

You have a solid business. Good reviews from customers who found you. A website. Maybe even a Google listing.


But when someone in Auburn, Roseville, or Rocklin searches for what you do — you’re nowhere to be found.


It’s frustrating. And it’s more common than you might think.


The good news: there are usually a handful of clear, fixable reasons this happens — and most of them don’t require a big investment to address.

Reason 1: Your Google Business Profile Is Incomplete or Unclaimed


This is the most common issue we see with Placer County businesses.


Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the listing that shows up on Google Maps when someone searches for your type of business nearby. It’s often the very first thing a potential customer sees — before they ever reach your website.


If your profile is:

  • Unclaimed (meaning you’ve never verified ownership)

  • Missing key info like hours, services, or photos

  • Showing an old address or phone number


...Google has less reason to show you, and customers have less reason to call.


The fix: Claim and verify your profile at business.google.com. Fill out every field completely — hours, services, business description, photos, and your correct phone number and address.


Reason 2: You’re in the Wrong Business Category


This one surprises a lot of business owners.


Your primary business category on Google is one of the strongest signals telling Google what you do and who to show you to. If your category is vague, wrong, or too broad, Google won’t surface you for the specific searches that matter.


For example: a plumber listed as “Home Improvement Store” won’t appear when someone searches “plumber near me Auburn.”


The fix: Log into your Google Business Profile and review your primary category. It should be the most specific, accurate description of your core service. Use the category a customer would search for, not internal business language.


Reason 3: You Don’t Have Enough Recent Reviews


Google Maps rankings are heavily influenced by reviews — both the quantity and how recent they are.


A business with 4 reviews from 2021 will lose ground to a competitor with 35 reviews from the last six months — even if your actual work is better. And this isn’t just about rankings. Customers look at reviews before they decide to call. Fewer reviews means less trust, which means fewer calls.


The fix: Build a simple, repeatable review request habit. After every completed job, send a quick text with a direct link to your Google review page. Something like: “Thanks for choosing us — if you’re happy with the work, a quick Google review means the world to us.” Short, natural, and effective.

Reason 4: Your Website Isn’t Telling Google Where You Are or What You Do


Your website and your Google Business Profile work together. If your website doesn’t reinforce your location and services, it weakens your overall local visibility.


Common website issues that hurt local rankings:

  • No city or region mentioned on the homepage or service pages

  • Service pages that are too thin — a paragraph or two with no real detail

  • Slow load times (Google measures this and penalizes slow sites)

  • No local keywords in page titles or headings

  • No clear contact information on every page


The fix: Make sure your city and service area appear naturally throughout your homepage copy, page titles, and service descriptions. For Placer County businesses, that means referencing Auburn, Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Folsom, and surrounding areas where it genuinely fits.


Reason 5: Your Business Information Is Inconsistent Across the Web


Google cross-references your business information across dozens of directory and listing sites — Yelp, Facebook, the Chamber of Commerce, HomeAdvisor, Angi, and more.


If your name, address, or phone number (called your “NAP”) is slightly different from site to site — a different abbreviation, an old address, a tracking phone number from an old campaign — Google treats that as a sign your business information isn’t reliable.


Inconsistency across directories quietly tanks local rankings, and most business owners have no idea it’s happening.

The fix: Search your business name and scan the top results. Is your address, phone number, and business name formatted exactly the same everywhere? Fix any discrepancies you find, starting with Google, Yelp, and Facebook.


Bonus: You’re Targeting Too Large a Service Area for a Placer County Business


Some businesses set their Google service area to an enormous radius — all of Northern California, or all of Sacramento County — thinking more coverage means more leads.

In practice, the opposite is often true.


Google rewards businesses with a clearly defined, focused area. A tighter service area tells Google exactly where you’re relevant — and makes you more likely to surface in local searches within that zone.


The fix: Set your service area to the cities and zip codes you actually serve most. For most Placer County businesses: Auburn, Roseville, Rocklin, Lincoln, Granite Bay, Loomis, Folsom, and the surrounding communities.
